The History of Rifugio Stivo "Prospero Marchetti"

More than a century of history, challenges, and love for the mountains. Since 1906, Rifugio Stivo has dominated the Alto Garda, resisting winds, wars, and the passing of time. Here are the stages that transformed a bold intuition into a true symbol of Trentino mountaineering.

Origins and the "race against time"

It all began in 1904 with a real race: Dr. Vittorio Stenico wanted at all costs to anticipate the Austrians, who were planning their own refuge right here. To beat them to it, the SAT purchased the land and started work at a rapid pace. A bet won hands down: on October 7, 1906, the structure was inaugurated and dedicated to Prospero Marchetti, a prominent figure from Arco, co-founder and first president of the SAT.

The Great Wars and rebirth

The twentieth century was not kind. After the damage of the First World War, the building was repaired, but it was the looting of the Second that brought it to its knees. Conditions were so disastrous that in 1948 the central SAT considered selling it. But the people of Arco would not have it: thanks to a large popular fundraising campaign, the local community found the money to renovate it. After five years of sweat and toil, on July 25, 1954, the refuge finally reopened its doors.

A refuge keeping up with the times

Over the years, the refuge has always known how to renew itself. After a major modernization in 1988, the solar power system was upgraded in 2011 to ensure the necessary energy. But the real revolution took place between 2016 and 2017: under the guidance of the central SAT, the structure was completely renovated. The exterior maintained its unmistakable historical charm, while the interior became highly efficient, improving hospitality and optimizing a precious high-altitude resource: rainwater.

Today: a balcony over Trentino

Currently, Rifugio Stivo is a reference point for those who love true mountain life. From its natural terrace at an altitude of 2,012 meters, you can enjoy a breathtaking 360° view: from the blue of Garda to the Dolomiti di Brenta, all the way to the glaciers of Adamello, Presanella, and countless other mountains. It is the perfect destination in every season for hikers, ski mountaineers, and dreamers—a place where genuine hospitality is felt in every corner.
