How to reach Rifugio Stivo safely

The mountain offers unique emotions, especially when approached with the right preparation. Before setting off, always remember to monitor the weather conditions and wear layered clothing suitable for the sudden temperature changes at high altitude. Prepare your backpack, lace up your boots, and choose the route best suited for your legs!

ATTENTION: in the presence of snow, all itineraries acquire inherent difficulties that must be considered. Generally speaking, the only route that does not present mountaineering difficulties is the one starting from Passo Santa Barbara, which is also the most frequented. In any case, it is recommended to keep updated by checking the weather forecast and the avalanche bulletin. You can also consult the refuge's Instagram and Facebook pages, which are always updated before each opening, or contact us directly for information.

Malga Campo di Drena (1380 m)

This ascent is, in our opinion, the most beautiful and convenient way to reach the mountain hut. Park before the barrier and take the forest road (path 623) which, after 100 meters, turns left uphill. Through an isolated and suggestive bucolic environment, the path enters a dense beech forest up to Cima Bassa (1,706 m). From here, take path 617 to the right. The first stretch passes through a varied forest, then continues among gentle hairpin bends and a rich floral variety. After the helicopter pad, you will be at our door in just a few meters.

A tip for the more resilient: to make the climb even more special, even if a bit harder (all beautiful things in life require more effort and fatigue), after about 500 meters on path 617, take the variant 617B. This route passes along the ridge among some rocks and leads directly to the summit of Monte Stivo (2,064 m): the panoramic view will leave you breathless!

The walk is magical in autumn, when the scent of mushrooms fills the air and the trees turn red and orange, but it is also splendid in summer, when the sun beats down and the shade of the beeches provides great relief.

Passo Santa Barbara (1169 m)

This is the most popular route to climb Monte Stivo. Continue by car to the Sant'Antonio parking lot located about 300 meters after bar K2 (at an altitude of 1,235 m). From here, on foot, take the clearly uphill forest road (path 608B) which, after about 200 meters of elevation gain, joins path 608 (coming from Malga Zanga) leading you to Malga Stivo (1,768 m). From there, passing between the two dilapidated but authentic structures, the path turns sharply left and then reaches the refuge via a series of steep hairpin bends. The route is mostly exposed to the sun on a slope that alternates open pastures and dense mountain pine groves.
Passo Bordala (1251 m)

This is another beautiful itinerary with slightly longer walking times. Leave your car in the parking lot in front of Albergo Passo Bordala and take the forest road (path 623): looking at the hotel, to the right. After a pleasant first part, almost flat in a dense beech forest, the track climbs suddenly until it reaches Cima Bassa (1,706 m). We have ascended practically from the opposite side compared to Malga Campo di Drena: from here, then, take path 617 on the left which, after an initial wooded but more varied stretch, through several low-gradient hairpin bends and a vast floral variety, leads to the helicopter pad and after a few meters to our door.

Traverse to Rifugio Viote
This excursion is a magical journey of about 7 hours that crosses an extraordinary variety of environments. You will pass from high-altitude pastures to wild meadows, where chamois and kestrels feed undisturbed, up to dense larch forests, beech forests, and alpine ridges immersed in silence. The final destination? A warm meal and a cozy bed at the refuge! It is a long and strenuous traverse, but technically simple: there are no aided or mountaineering sections. The route develops along a spectacular panoramic ridge between the Vallagarina and the Valle di Cavedine, up to the summit of Stivo.

We will not describe the entire itinerary here (the track is easily found online), but here is some practical info:

Departure: Normally you park near the Capanna Viote and follow the path from north to south, but it is also possible to proceed in the opposite direction.
